How to entertain and
occupy the kids on a
snowy day?
Winter.
It's cold.
You're home.
The kids are home.
Bored stiff.
What to do?
Here are a few ideas.
Cooking with the children:
Arrange a family fun, creative and flavorful evening
where everyone takes part in cutting, mixing, and
serving, and later sitting together for a special
family dinner that will delight and satisfy all.
Vegetable soup can occupy all family members,
where each child chooses a vegetable he prefers
to cut and peel.
Preparing dough for bread or cookies is a
wonderful way to occupy the children on a snowy
day. Yes, some kitchen riot is somewhat involved,
but there is a bonus: the experience turns to family
teamwork and provides them with a special treat
they took part in making.
Have the kids knead the dough thoroughly. No
mixer in the world can compare to hand kneading,
and this is a great opportunity to get a double
result: praiseworthy dough and satisfied kids. They
will enjoy watching the dough rise and double
in size, and later on working with it and forming
different shapes.
Photography:
Dress the kids warm and take pictures of them
playing in the snow. In order for the kids to
participate, show them the pictures taken on the
digital camera. Have them photograph you as well.
Instead of telling them how to pose, catch them
spontaneously while running, jumping, playing, or
throwing snowballs.
Picture Albums:
Here's something to do with all the pictures you’ve
taken that just lay there out of place. Have each
child create his own, personal picture album
according to the pictures and order he chooses.
Decorate the album with stickers, paper cutout
crafts, and funny expressions by each picture to
enhance the appearance of the album. You can use
almost anything you find for decoration – ribbons,
buttons, strings, safety pins, badges, paper or
silk flowers, rub on stickers, felt or other material
cutout into shapes, beads, stamps and anything
else that comes to mind. It's recommended not to
use heavy objects to avoid weighing down the page
and cause it to wrinkle or rip.
Picture Frames:
Buy simple wooden frames and have the kids
decorate the empty space around the frame or
photograph with paint or different stickers. It will
make a great gift or a new wall hanging for their
bedroom.
Great opportunity to get the house organized:
There's always something to clean or organize
around the home, the question is how to turn it into
an enjoyable experience??
There are a few options:
Have each child choose the place he prefers to
focus on – bedroom, living room, playroom, and
even shoveling snow from the driveway. You can
pair an older sibling with a younger one to turn it
into team work.
Assign different tasks such as "return all the red
items", "return 3 things that belong in a certain
drawer", or "pick up everything that needs to be
thrown out", and so forth. They will come up with
their own ideas as you go on. Offer prizes or treats
for whoever follows directions.
Arts & Crafts:
Buy a plain white or other light colored apron and
have them paint on words or pictures such as smiley
faces, flowers, hearts. You can teach and help them
sew on patches or beads according to their choice.
Bowling:
Have empty plastic bottles? Assign them to the kids
to paint or decorate with cutout crafts. Set them
up as bowling pins and have them roll a ball to see
how many they can knock down. Make sure nothing
breakable is in sight.
Trivia Game:
Make up questions and riddles in different subjects
according to what they know and have them
answer by raising their hand so that everyone gets
a chance to answer. Provide prizes or treats when
they answer correctly.
Enjoy!
